Newsletter growth is simpler than you think. Here's why.
A lot of people complicate newsletter growth.
Yes, there are some fancy growth levers that you can use to speed up the process and make it more efficient.
But at its core, growing a newsletter requires a solid idea (your value proposition) backed with consistent execution.
To prove it - and show that it’s replicable - I’ll use 2 different examples (1 from my own portfolio) because nothing speaks louder than actual, real-life examples.
I wanted to launch my own series of local newsletters since late 2023 but I never had time or space to make it a priority.
That changed in early 2024 so I decided to prove my theory and grow a local newsletter to 1,000 subscribers in the first quarter.
I put together a solid value proposition, tested it amongst friends and family, launched cheap Meta ads (literally ~$1/day), and made announcements on social media and local forums (subreddits, etc.)
You could say that I already had a head start since the format of a local newsletter has already been tested but so was almost every other format of a newsletter. You just need to adjust it to your niche.
By publishing weekly content and constantly running cheap ads (~.2 dollars per sub), posting on socials, and cross-posting to relevant forums, I’ve managed to grow it to almost 4,000 subscribers in less than 2 months and make it a net positive investment.
Example #2: Maker Mind
Anne Laure is a founder of Ness Labs. A community and collection of tools for mindful makers.
Anne is a successful author and digital creator but it all started with a newsletter. She wanted to share her knowledge on how to become more productive and creative.
That’s when she decided to launch the Maker Mind newsletter.
And to grow it, she invested in posting free content to grow her online presence, provide more value and, as a result, generate subscribers for her newly-founded newsletter.
But Anne understood the importance of consistency and provide value to the right target audience. So instead of publishing when she felt like it, she decided to publish 100 articles about neuroscience in 100 days and to also share them on her socials to improve discoverability.
The effect?
After 100 days, she had over 6,000 newsletter subscribers than she then used to launch a 6-figure community and suite of digital products.
Although elements will always be different and you’ll have to adjust them based on your niche, target audience, and your monetization strategy - the formula is always the same.
Step 1 - Formulate a value proposition that resonates with your target audience
Step 2 - Create content that efficiently reaches your target audience
Step 3 - Consistently provide value to reinforce trust, generate new subscribers, and monetize the already-existing audience
So, while there are many different tactics to test and experiment with, at the core of newsletter growth are really these 3 steps.
If you’re still sitting on an idea for a newsletter that you always wanted to start or your newsletter growth has recently reached a plateau, go back to these 3 steps and follow the formula.
